Getting started with sparkle matrix

I have ordered a set of sparkle matrixes for my class but am quite new to coding. I cannot find any guidance online as to how to use and code them. Am I right in assuming that each led on the matrix acts like a single sparkle? In which case, is each one allocated a number? Also, can multiple matrixes be controlled by a single crumble in the same way that a string of sparkles can be set up? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
