Coding the Crumble from a Web Browser

We’ve been very busy here at Crumble HQ this summer,  taking the next steps on our Crumble 2.0 journey. We’re excited to announce that you can now try our brand-new web-based version of the Crumble software, ‘Crumble Code’ – available at code.crumble.tech  Note: you will need to use a Chromium-based web browser e.g. Chrome, Edge or Opera.

Crumble Code

Many of you may know that we’ve been working towards a new version of the Crumble software. We wanted to unify the different versions into one neat bundle, giving everyone the same experience across all devices, as well as making it much easier for us to add new features. This paves the way for new web, desktop and mobile apps, ready for our Crumble 2.0 launch. It has been no mean feat – everything we have worked on for the past 11 years has had to be rewritten for this new version, even down to a new ‘local’ version of the compiler, allowing for complete offline use of the Crumble software.

What’s Changed?

If you’re a Chromebook user, you may experience a bit of Déjà vu, however many features from the desktop version have now been included: duplicate, custom variables and an improved colour picker. Desktop users will notice a sharper look, especially on higher resolution displays as all of the blocks are now vectorised.

Crumble Code is a Progressive Web App (PWA) meaning it can be installed for offline use or rolled out by admins through the Google Admin Console. These are replacing traditional Chrome Apps on Chromebooks as well as becoming more common place on mobile devices and desktops. Learn more here.

It also includes the latest firmware update with smoothed motor control. This greatly reduces the chance of Crumble resets when the batteries are getting low.

Where Next?

In the near future, we will have finished our major code rewrite and have a completely unified ‘code base’ that we’ll use in all versions of the Crumble software. Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be updating the new software with some exciting new features, including Bluetooth support for the new version of the Crumble Controller. We’ll be sharing more details very soon.
